Tooting Our Own Horn: Flavorpill’s Halley Bondy

Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 5:31 pm by in New York, News, Staff

redheadedman.jpgWe think all of our contributors are pretty damn special — I mean, the strength of our listings, from the writing to the picks themselves, can really be attributed to our rad writers. But once in a while, we’ve got to call out a particularly stellar dude or ‘ette. Halley Bondy, your time has come. Halley covers a lot of performing arts events for Flavorpill NYC, but, turns out that when she’s not diligently scouring the off-Broadway scene for ace plays, she’s creating her own. Halley was just named Best Playwright of the NYC Fringe Fest, and we couldn’t be prouder. (Seriously. Remember how your mom cried and totally embarrassed you at high-school graduation? It’s like that.) Her play, The Redheaded Man, follows a schizophrenic architect, his drug-addled shrink, and his scheming girlfriend and drunken best friend. Sounds hotter than Gossip Girl! The play is being presented as part of the Fringe Encore Series, so New Yorkers still have a chance to catch FFBF (that’s For Flavorpill By Flavorpill) entertainment. And congrats, Halley!

Sascha Lewis Makes Ideas Happen

coney1.jpg

Flavorpill co-founder Sascha Lewis was recently asked to curate a page on the Behance.net, a social networking site for creative professionals. Sascha chose his favorite galleries from among the thousands posted by artists and designers on the site, reflecting the same artistic ethos behind the selection of our own cover art, featured weekly on all of our city publications. There’s a stunning photo essay, which follows the photographer’s daughter over years of maturation; digitally enhanced “LaChapellesque” shots of Coney Island; sci-fi illustrations; and a particularly whimsical world tour. Check out all of his picks, and learn more about Behance. We can all be creators.

DNCHRD Photos

def-leppard.jpg

The FP staff was in rare form last night at LVHRD’s DNCHRD party/color contest at the Art Director’s Club on 29th Street. While I was in the building like Def Leppard at a bar mitzvah, Miguel’s moves slayed all the ladies, and the rest of team green just shook their glo-sticks like it was 1992. To relive the glory (OK, the purple team technically won at musical chairs — pffft, whatever!) or catch the spectacle for the first time, check out senior ed Anna B’s Flickr stream. Thanks to everyone who showed up to support Flavorpill, LVHRD, and the green team. If you’ve got choice shots from last night, drop us a link in the comments. Otherwise, nurse that hangover, and we’ll see you out again soon.

DNCHRD VDO

dnchrd-vdo.jpg

Have you purchased your green tickets yet for next Tuesday’s DNCHRD party? Dig out your old Girl Scout uniform, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume, and the Jolly Green Giant tights, and polish up your repertoire. For some movement inspiration, check out LVHRD’s latest “vdo” of all six team captains storming Uniqlo and dancing, erm, hard.

Flavorpill DNCs HRD

On Tuesday, May 20th, LVHRD hosts its fourth DNCHRD competition, a marathon dance-off that’s more manic than the prom scene in Grease. The event features six teams of color-coordinated dancers, and everyone is invited to participate — so long as you’re monochromatically attired and properly enthused. Flavorpill’s own Leah Taylor is captain of the green team, so may we suggest emeralds, eco-chic, and Kermit-the-Frog costumes? Green is officially the new black.

Flavorpill Talent: Todd Goldstein

We highlight a lot of superb art, film, music, and literature around these parts. But now we’re particularly proud to shine a spot on one of our own: Todd Goldstein. While not furiously copyediting listings across the Flavorpill network, Todd plays guitar for Brooklyn upstarts Harlem Shakes, and performs his own tunes under his solo-project moniker, ARMS. While we’ve always been a fan of this multi-instrumental singer/songwriter, UK paper the Guardian has recently taken notice, calling ARMS “very, very good.” Well, we couldn’t agree more.

She’s a Believer: Flavorpill’s Shana Nys Dambrot

We’re on a roll! First there was Morgan’s solo art launch, and now our LA Managing Editor, Shana, has turned up in Eggers territory in the new Believer. An artist and art hound, Shana sat down with acclaimed Hollywood set designer Sandy Reynolds-Wasco to talk about key components of a creative and authentic set. And Reynolds-Wasco would know — she and her art-director/production designer hubby are behind some of the most celebrated sets of recent cinema, from Pulp Fiction to The Royal Tenenbaums. Math Rock: Flavorpill’s Morgan Croney

math-rock-morgan-croney.jpg

We’re pleased (and proud) to announce that one of our own, Morgan Croney, has a solo art show coming up. Make the trek with us from Flavorpill HQ to Williamsburg’s HQ Gallery for Math Rock, which explores “a place where reason and nonsense collapse into each other.” Normally we’d insert a joke about Morgan being our top programming nerd, and his art reflecting pocket-protector tendencies, but we’re too stoked about checking out the show. It’s up this Friday, and on display through Sunday, June 8.

Attention LA Arthounds & Party People

If you’re reading this from the left coast and looking for a fun Friday and a cultured weekend, we’ve got you covered thanks to two of our own. Tonight, hit up the Getty for our Fridays Off the 405 party. Complementing the museum’s current California Video exhibit, pop mistresses and A/V aces Something in Spanish rock out, with visuals. Tomorrow, Flavorpill LA Contributing Editor Ashley Tibbits exhibits her photographs at the LAB 101 Space in Culver City in a show called Here Is Where You’ll Find Me. Up through Wednesday, April 23, her “faceless portraits” examine femininity with wit and grace.

Blender Drinks

Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 4:38 pm by in Friends, Staff

Sometimes-Flavorpill contributor James Jung is a lucky man. Not all of us can call getting drunk with bands “work.” Not everyone gets to expense (or even have) drinks with Justice or Spank Rock. While you go ahead and tell yourself that your gig still has plenty of other perks, check out the latest installment of Mr. Jung’s hard-hitting bacchanalian reportage for Blender.com, starring NYC smooth-poppers Tigercity. They’ve been on our radar for a while, but it’s great to see them so… drunk.
