Scott Heiferman: Salon Review

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 10:29 am by in Friends, New York, Online culture, Our Events, Partners

meetup.jpgA couple weeks back, Flavorpill HQ-ers and friends got a brutal wake-up call from Meetup.com founder Scott Heiferman. “Get the f*ck away from screens!” He yelled. Wha? This was semi-shocking news, coming from and directed at “new media” mavens. But over the course of his Flavorpill Salon talk at Housing Works, Heiferman explained the power of both the nefarious “invasion of the screens” (when you only involve your iPhone, think of all the human interaction you’re missing, and the relationships you fail to build) as well as a self-organizing, DIO — that’d be “do it ourselves” — spirit. Ultimately, for Heiferman it seems that while online organizing is a useful platform — after all, Meetup is an Internet company — “virtual groups are virtually worthless,” and face-to-face interactions are still the best form of communication and organization. And that’s a philosophy that jives pretty well with Flavorpill’s ethos of getting readers off the couch and into the culture of their city.

BET did! The stylish kids behind the BET Lifestyle blog were out to document the (impeccably dressed) droves last Friday night for our final One Step Beyond throwdown of the season. If you were at the American Museum of Natural History, getting your mind blown by Talib Kweli, Buckshot, Kidz in the Hall, and Pete Rock, link us to your photo stream in the comments. Share and share alike; our pics will be up soon, too.

Tickets are on sale now for our last One Step Beyond party of the season, next Friday, June 27, at the AMNH. This is sure to be a sold-out shindig — starring BK’s fave conscious hip-hopper Talib Kweli, legendary MC and producer Pete Rock, and Boot Camp Clik’s Buckshot — so snag tix before it’s too late. And fret not, we’ll be back in action, taking it even beyonder, come September.

You can win a digital video camera, a pro Flickr account, and a one-year subscription to the New Yorker — just by sharing your unique perspective. Check out the submissions so far, then get going on your own entries.

Hopefully y’all got down with us, Switch, and Van Scott last Friday at the American Museum of Natural History. Our photogs caught some of you — if you’ve got a Flickr set that includes the party, post it in the comments! And stay tuned to our OSB page for audio streams of the night’s sets and another vid from our mates at VIMBY. Meanwhile, gear up for June’s installment with Talib Kweli and Pete Rock; it will be our last at the museum until fall.

One Step Beyond Tomorrow Night!

OK party people, it’s that time again — and we’ve still got some tickets available to One Step Beyond tomorrow night. This month’s bash features a sick DJ set by UK primo-producer Switch (and by “primo” we mean: master at the decks for M.I.A., Lily Allen, Santogold, and Basement Jaxx), along with local wildcat (and Berlin-techno enthusiast) DJ Van Scott. Check our full write-up, or catch up on previous parties. Then grab your tix and scoot uptown! We’ve barred those pesky barriers this time around, so everyone will have plenty of room to wild out on the dance floor.

Whew. We’re still reeling from last Friday’s One Step Beyond — what about you? Luckily, our staff photogs were there in force to capture the party mayhem (courtesy of DJs Matthew Dear and Ambivalent) and jog our memories. Find your friends in our photo gallery, and stay tuned for news on upcoming One Step Beyonds — featuring Switch in May and Talib Kweli in June.

Heads up, party people. Tickets are still available to next Friday’s One Step Beyond, featuring Ghostly phenom Matthew Dear. He’ll pack the Rose Center with bass-heavy techno, complete with arch-pop flourishes. Ambivalent, off of Richie Hawtin’s venerable M_NUS label, opens the evening, joined throughout by A/V aces Fuevoz. Mark your calendar and grab your tix (while they last) — and get the multimedia lowdown on the entire series, with video recaps, photos, and audio streams from OSB performances.

We’ve also got a page for our west-coast museum series: you can check out upcoming shows and past round-ups from Fridays Off the 405 (at the Getty in LA), with videos coming soon.
